Engineering Sustainable Biopolymers
Throo Lab creates plant-based biopolymers as an alternative to synthetic, petroleum-derived materials. By combining ingredients such as cellulose nanofibers (CNF), cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), soy derivatives, and agar, we produce biodegradable and non-toxic sheets suitable for creative applications. A chitosan coating adds water resistance without relying on plastics or harsh chemicals. Designed to break down naturally, these materials aim to reduce environmental impact and carbon footprint. Throo Lab offers an earth-conscious option for designers seeking more responsible and circular material solutions.
From Earth, Back to Earth
All ingredients used in our formula are kitchen-safe and locally sourced when possible. No harmful chemicals. No microplastics. After use, the biopolymer naturally decomposes in soil within weeks. Complete biodegradation confirmed under aerobic conditions within 14–28 days.
Supporting Creative and Experimental Use
Our materials can be molded and cured with added elements like natural pigments, wool roving, threads or fibers, allowing for rich visual and textural possibilities. Unlike conventional textiles, they respond better to sculpting than stitching, making them ideal for experimental fashion, costume, or installation work. Throo Lab began as a personal research project and now serves as a platform for testing and sharing sustainable materials. We hope to inspire designers, artists, and makers to rethink materials through a more ecological lens.
